Derm TV.com Weekly Update ~ What causes adult acne in females?

By Miss Style Apothecary · August 15, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

Here is a great episode from Dr. Schultz on DermTV.com today.  What causes adult acne in females?  Dr. Schultz explains that there has been a significant rise in adult acne in women which is terrible news for women across the board.  Don’t worry though, Dr. Schultz goes on to explain that pollution, makeup that is too heavy, and stresses add to the rise in adult acne.  Lesson learned, wash, exfoliate and tone.

Derm TV.com Weekly Update ~ Why is using Sunscreen/Insect Repellent together not good for you?

By Miss Style Apothecary · July 26, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

Why would using a combination sunscreen / insect repellent be a bad idea?  It seems like it would be a great idea, and I love everything 2-in-1.  Dr. Schultz let me know in his tip of the week why that might not be the best idea.  Since you need to constantly reapply your sunscreen, you end up reapplying a large quantity of insect repellent.  Which will keep the bugs at bay, however the harsh chemicals are not good for us especially when used in large doses.  Check out www.DermTV.com to see an episode on whether or not pores open and close.

Derm TV.com Weekly Update ~ What does a UV Index Mean??

By Miss Style Apothecary · July 19, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

Dr. Schultz’s tip of the week from DermTV.com is something that never crossed my mind.  What does a UV Index mean?  Along with your daily forecast (rainy, sunny, hot, cold) there is also a UV Index which tells you how strong the harmful rays of the sun will be.  This number is on a scale of 1 to 11, the higher the number the stronger and more dangerous the rays are.  Just another reason to make sure you apply sunscreen everyday!  Check out this week’s www.DermTV.com episode!

Derm TV.com Weekly Update ~ Choosing the right sunscreen

By Miss Style Apothecary · June 29, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

Dr. Schultz’s tip and episode for the week of July 4th.  The tip is great and something Dr. Schultz commonly recommends to his patients: choose the sunscreen that you like the most in the 15-30 SPF range.  SPF 15 offers 88% protection from the sun's burning UVB rays; SPF 30 offers 95% protection; SPF 60 offers 99% protection; and, no sunscreen offers 100% protection.  So, choose the one that you like and will remember to reapply (no need for the goopy SPF 75).  Also, since everyone will be busy attending barbeques and other July 4th festivities, the www.DermTV.com episode is on how to treat insect bites.  Hope you enjoy!

Weekly Update ~ DermTV.com - Antioxidants Become a Suncreen When Used During the Day

By Miss Style Apothecary · June 23, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

Dr. Schultz’s episode “Antioxidants Become a Sunscreen When Used During the Day,” shares with viewers that antioxidants actually absorb UV light when used on the skin during the day.  However, when this happens, the antioxidant no longer is absorbed into the skin to perform its normal duties.  This said Dr. Schultz shares 2 simple rules to follow, use sunscreen and an antioxidant in the morning but also to use an antioxidant at night as well.  I never knew antioxidants absorbed UV light!  To view the episode go to DERMTV.com

In today’s episode, Dr. Schultz points out s few very important (and a little bit shocking) statistics surrounding melanoma.  Melanoma is the only preventable cancer that has seen a rise in deaths.  Approximately 9,000 Americans will die this year from melanoma, which Dr. Schultz accurately describes as unnecessary.  Make sure to have your annual skin cancer screening!  Follow the link to see this weeks DermTV episode

Dermtv.com ~ How Much Sunscreen to Put On - MUST SEE

By Miss Style Apothecary · May 25, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

How Much Sunscreen to Put On discusses the actual physical amount of sunscreen needed for full protection.  This is particularly interesting because most people (myself definitely included) do not use the recommended amount.  Dr. Schultz further’s his cause for sunscreen protection when he points out that the SPF of a sunscreen is decreased to its square root if not enough is put on.

It's not just about wrinkles: Color & Texture

When you ask a person if they're happy with their skin, and they say no, and then you ask them why, they'll most likely respond that they don't like their lines and wrinkles. But it's not just about wrinkles! In this episode of DermTV, Dr. Schultz explains what you should look out for when you're examining your own skin and trying to figure out how to improve it.

Dermtv.com ~ Tips of the Week

By Miss Style Apothecary · May 10, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month

If you can spot a skin cancer, then you can spot a killer. The reality is, however, it's difficult for most people to identify one on themselves. This is because the transition from mole to pre-cancerous growth to cancer is very gradual (it takes many months to many years), and since you live with it, it's very hard to notice the gradual change (you remember how it looked yesterday, not the year before). The good news is, however, that your dermatologist can spot a suspicious growth. So in honor of Skin Cancer Awareness Month, see a dermatologist for a possibly life saving skin cancer screening exam. And visit AAD.org to find a FREE skin cancer screening near you.

We all use sunscreen, but are we using enough?  Find out how sunscreen you should use on your face in Dr. Schultz’s tip of the week!

Dr. Schultz’s Tip of the Week:  How Much Sunscreen to Use on Your Face
As it warms up outside, but not quite enough to spend time at the beach, and thus you're still only applying sunscreen on your face and hands, how much do you need? Using too much can be uncomfortable and "goopy," and did you know that not using enough can cut the delivered SPF by the square root of the stated SPF (e.g., a 15 becomes a 4, a 50 becomes a 7)? It's simple: for traditional sunscreens use an amount equal to the size of a nickel, and for chem-free sunblocks, use an amount equal to a pea!

Dr. Schultz’s Tip of the Week:

Does Shaving Cause Your Hair to Thicken?
Some people avoid shaving unwanted hair because they're afraid it causes the hair to grow back thicker. I'm happy to tell you that this just isn't true. When your hair grows from the root, the ends are thin and tapered and the rest of the hair grows at a consistent thickness (think of a sharpened pencil). However, when you shave, you cut off the thin end, leaving just the thick part of the hair. As your hair continues to grow, it grows from the root and gets longer, but the end never becomes thin again (until the hair is fully removed and a new one grows from the root). Thus, some people are left with the impression that shaving causes hair to grow more thickly but as you now know, it's just an illusion.

Dr. Schultz’s Tip of the Week -- Use Moisturizers with SPF in the Winter:
As you can tell, I'm a huge proponent of wearing sunscreen every day, even in the winter, and even on cloudy days. During the summer this is easy because people are used to wearing sunscreen on warm sunny days. In the winter...not so much. In order to get your winter sunscreen fix, I suggest using moisturizers with sunscreen so that they not only treat your dry skin but also protect you from the sun. And if you're wondering whether or not moisturizers with sunscreen are just as effective as sunscreen alone, the answer is yes, as long as you apply it as the first product after your cleanser and toner.

Curel ~ Launches Skin Advisor w/ Dr. Westley

By Miss Style Apothecary · February 26, 2010 · 0 Comments ·

Curél has launched a new interactive, online tool, the Skin Advisor that offers skin analysis and provides advice on common skincare issues. Check out for yourself @ Curel Skin Advisor

Below you will find few quotes from Dr. Westley who partner with Curel to create this tool, along with a link to Dr. Westley unveiling the Skin Advisor. Please let me know if you will be able to post information about the Skin Advisor to your website. We could also offer a giveaway of Curel product.

  • “I partnered with Curel to create the Skin Advisor, an interactive tool on curel.com designed to help users identify and address skincare concerns like dryness, itching, allergies and eczema, to name a few.  10-20% of children have eczema, and many continue to suffer in adulthood.  One of the most common complaints I see in my office is dry skin, itchiness and skin prone to rashes.  People don’t know what regimen is right for their skin and many times parents are also confused what they should be using for their children’s skin.”

  • “I worked closely with Curel to develop a series of questions that recreate the experience of visiting the dermatologist’s office. When users answer the questions provided, the Skin Advisor generates a customized analysis of their skin concerns as well as lifestyle tips and Curel product recommendations to treat those concerns.  The advisor is very detailed, asking questions about skin type and very specific questions about symptoms people experience, just like I ask my own patients.  The analysis generated is also very detailed and gives very useful tips and recommendations for people to start treating their skin.  There is also a helpful allergen guide that people can navigate if they suspect they may be allergic to something they are coming into contact with.  It actually can help target a specific ingredient that they can look for on product labels.”

  • “Once consumers complete the Skin Advisor questionnaire, they can read more about the various skin issues covered at curel.com. If users still have additional questions, they can submit those questions online and I will answer them personally and provide additional insight.”

“While serious skin conditions require a dermatologist’s attention, the Curel Skin Advisor offers an advanced skin analysis and provides valuable advice for people seeking relief from common skincare issues, putting the cure in Curel.”

Did you know that you can actually get wrinkles while you sleep?  Dr. Schultz shares a little anti-aging secret to prevent pesky nighttime wrinkles.
Dr. Schultz’s Tip of the Week: Silk Pillowcases Prevent Wrinkles

As we've mentioned before, sleeping on your side can actually cause wrinkles (from your face being pushed against your pillowcase and the creasing that thus occurs, night after night). If you can't avoid sleeping on your side, then spring for some silk pillowcases that can prevent friction between your face and your pillowcases and enable your face to slide as you sleep. If, on the other hand, you sleep on your back, then consider yourself lucky!

The Most Important Thing to Know About Your

You can have the best skincare products with the best ingredients and use them as directed, but your skin can actually get worse. Can you guess why? It could be a result of not knowing your skin type and thus using the wrong products for it. If your cheeks consistently feel tight or dry or appear flaky, you have dry skin. If your t-zone consistently appears oily or if you break out with acne, then you have oily skin. If you consistently have both dry skin and oily skin at the same time, then you have combination skin. And if your skin is consistently neither dry nor oily, then you're party of the lucky few who have normal skin. Knowing your skin type is half the battle and using skin-type appropriate products can make a huge positive difference with your skin care regimen.

When it comes time to make your New Year’s Resolutions, don’t forget to think of your skin!  How many times have your promised to apply sunscreen daily?  Or how often have you told yourself you’ll use moisturizer?  It takes just a few minutes each day to have beautiful skin!

Dr. Schultz, cosmetic dermatologist and founder of DermTV.com helps your make five easy New Year’s Resolutions for healthy, glowing skin in 2010:

  1. I will determine my skin type. Finding out what your facial skin type is with respect to its balance of oil and water is crucial to choosing the right products for your face.
  2. I will find products I like. Regardless of your skin type, finding facial products that smell and feel good to you will make you more apt to use them regularly.
  3. I will establish a daily routine. Following the same routine twice a day every day regardless of which products you are using (glycolics, anti-oxidants, sunscreens, cleansers, toners or moisturizers, etc.) will significantly improve your skin’s color and texture.
  4. I will protect my skin and make it glow. Use a gentle chemical (glycolic) exfoliator, an anti-oxidant, and a sunscreen every day, summer or winter, rain or shine.  This way, your skin will always be protected from the sun and the combination of anti-oxidants and exfoliants will make your skin lustrous and glowing.
  5. I will examine my skin. Any change in color, size, texture, or shape that you can detect in any skin growth or mole is not a subtle change and should be brought to your dermatologist’s attention as soon as possible.  In addition, make sure that you have a complete skin examination annually by a board certified dermatologist (preferably during your birth month).

Don’t miss Dr. Schultz’s DermTV.com episode Three 2010 Skin Care New Year’s Resolutions.

The Skin Care New Year's Resolution That May Save Your Life

While I hope that you're wearing sunscreen every day, did you know that there's another key to preventing skin cancer? This key is performing monthly, at-home skin cancer self-examinations because there are skin cancer early warning signs such as pre-cancerous growths that you yourself can identify. One method to do so is to look for symmetrical moles. For example, if you have two dark brown or black moles in the same location on each side of your body (if you were to draw a line down the middle), they may be pre-cancerous. This doesn't mean they're cancer; it just means that if they are in fact pre-cancerous, they could develop into cancer, and thus should be shown to a dermatologist and possibly removed.

For more information on conducting at-home skin cancer self-examinations, download the free pamphlet from The Skin Cancer Foundation.

It’s official…winter is in the air, literally.  Today marks the first day of winter and the always-prepared Dr. Schultz dedicated today’s DermTV.com episode to Winter Skin Care.  Plus, he included a great winter skin tip in his famous Tip of the Week (see below!).  Taking a break for the holidays, Dr. Schultz is ending the week early with an episode on antioxidants.  Tune in on Wednesday for, Why You Can Only Apply Antioxidants at Night.

Dr. Schultz’s Tip of the Week:  Begin to Win Your Battle with Drying Winter Air

A natural reaction to cold winter nights is to pump up the heat. But did you know that most forms of heat will be terribly drying? Thus, the first and most effortless line of defense against itchy winter skin is to add moisture to your bedroom air to allow your skin to "drink" while you sleep. However, make sure you use a cold water humidifier, not hot water. Cold water humidifiers are easy to clean and much less apt to allow the growth of germs in the water chamber. If you have a free standing radiator and instead want to just put a pot of water on the radiator so the water evaporates and humidifies the air when the radiator heat comes on, be sure to wash the pot in the dishwasher every day. And stayed tuned into DermTV all winter long for more winter skin care tips, starting today, the official first day of winter!
